WILLIE Russell’s award-winning play Educating Rita will bring two well-known Australian actors to the stage at Warburton.
Lisa Chappell of McLeod’s Daughters fame and All Saints’ David Downer will star in Mecca Theatre’s presentation at the Upper Yarra Arts Centre on Saturday, 21 July at 8pm.
The play, described as both painfully funny and passionately serious, revolves around Frank, a cynical professor who drinks too much, and Rita, a naive hairdresser.
Rita has a thirst for knowledge and chooses Frank to introduce her to culture.
Frank soon discovers that Rita has a lot more common sense than the so-called ‘educated class’ within which he moves.
Drawn by her zest for life and natural intelligence he begins to fall in love. Rita’s life however soon changes in her new environment and their worlds collide.
Working on the theory that two’s company, three’s a hoot, the Upper Yarra Arts Centre is offering a special ticket deal for Educating Rita — buy two tickets and get another ticket free of charge.
Tickets are available at the centre, or by phoning 5966 5040.

Coinciding with Educating Rita at the Upper Yarra Arts Centre the Upper Yarra Historical Society will present School Days from 10 to 21 July.
Revisit school days long-gone through the exhibition of historic school furniture, books, uniforms and other classroom memorabilia from the Upper Yarra region over the past century.
