THE ATHENAEUM Theatre Company’s final production for the year kicks off tonight (Tuesday) in what promises to be an all-singing, all-dancing, celebration of the stage musical.
“Stepping Out – The Musical”, based on an original play by Richard Harris and directed by Alan Burrows, has been hailed as a “toe-tapping triumph”.
Set at a weekly tap-dancing class, it taps into the hilarious story of the lives, laughs and loves of the assortment of people who, for very different reasons, decide that they can tap their worries away.
Dianne Crough has choreographed the show and has the lead role of Mavis, the dance teacher.
Jennie Kellaway is Maxine, one of nine ladies of assorted ages, ambitions and sizes who, with one man student who doesn’t want to be noticed, and usually isn’t, all have a story to tell. Mrs Fraser, the piano player, is a crusty old biddy who provides a lot of the humour in the play.
“The script is probably one of the best musical scripts ever because it was a play first and a very successful comedy/drama, which has transformed very well into a musical,” Ms Crough said.
Ms Kellaway said “Stepping Out” is in the genre of musicals such as “Chicago” and “Chorus Line” and with lots of laughs, singing and dancing, is suitable for all ages.
“Stepping Out” will play through until Saturday, 10 December with a special matinee on Sunday, 4 December.
