ST BRIGID’S Primary School students are looking for net results in terms of staying healthy and active with a game of tennis at the local courts after school.
The school has signed on as part of the Australian Sports Commission’s Active After-School Communities (AASC) program aimed at building a healthier lifestyle for primary school-aged children.
Matthew Calf, regional co-ordinator for the Eastern Metro region said AASC is all about children having fun while being active.
“To achieve this the program creates a non-competitive environment, catering for children of all ability levels.”
“It’s about creating opportunities for kids to increase their activity and confidence levels. It encourages them to try new things and get the message across that playing games with friends is fun,” he said.
At St Brigid’s, the program is being run two afternoons a week with tennis being the sport of choice this term.
Mr Calf said the program had also helped link St Brigid’s, the local community and sporting clubs through the involvement of community members in delivering the activities.
Any community members, including parents, coaches and sporting clubs, wishing to get involved in the program can contact Mr Calf on 8698 7701, or visit www.ausport.gov.au/aasc.
