THE Warburton community has thrown its support behind the CFA and presented local firefighters with a cheque for $1000.
The owner of the Warburton IGA store, Shane Wyles, presented the cheque to brigade captain Maurice Dell and president Barry Marshall last week.
Mr Wyles has a fire donation box at his store and says the community donated around $600 in record time.
“We were so impressed with how much the community gave that we decided to match their efforts and bring the donation to $1000,” Mr Wyles said.
The money will be split between the Reefton and Warburton CFAs and will mostly be spent on upgrades.
Captain Maurice Dell said the Warburton brigade would spend its money on upgrading its salvage van.
“Community donations are really important and we simply can’t function without them,” he said.
“Whenever we need something the community is behind us 100 per cent and we want to thank everyone for their support.”
Mr Wyles said the Warburton community was unlike any other, giving generously even to their most distant neighbours.
“After this year’s fires The Gaffneys Creek Rebuilding Group raised more than $400 for the Gaffneys Creek community despite being a good 60kms apart,” he said.
“Acts of generosity like this show what kind of community Warburton is.”
