YARRA Junction Primary School was one of 22 Victorian schools recognised for their achievements during Victorian Literacy and Numeracy Week.
The school received a $2000 grant for their initiatives in encouraging children to achieve through high quality literacy and numeracy teaching.
Numeracy coordinator, Dianne Wilkinson, said the school runs a number of programs which accounted for their award success, including their “Read to Succeed Program.”
Ms Wilkinson said under the program the school works in conjunction with parents to encourage children to read at home on a daily basis.
The award was presented to principal Christopher Thomas and school captains Cameron and Jessica by the Minister for Education Services, Jacinta Allan, at Melbourne Zoo.
“While all government schools are committed to delivering better literacy and numeracy rates, these annual awards enable us to reward those demonstrating creative, effective and sustained approaches to teaching,” Ms Allan said.
Ms Wilkinson said the grant would buy books and resource the Read to Succeed Program and the reading program.
