IT WAS one of life’s less fortunate little twists and turns which led Derek Ball to change careers.
“I was advised to give away the painting after a back injury. A friend, a massage therapist, suggested I should look at massage as a career,” explained the painter turned massage therapist.
“I did and it’s a decision I’m very happy with,” said Derek, who has just moved his business, Human Balance, from Healesville to spacious new massage rooms at Woori Yallock.
A qualified remedial massage therapist and member of the Australian Association of Massage Therapists, Derek offers remedial, therapeutic and relaxation massage.
Techniques include relaxation, deep tissue and mobilising massage, trigger point therapy, muscle energy and myofascial release techniques, transverse friction, cupping and stretching.
“Remedial therapists have knowledge in anatomy, physiology and kinesiology, which aids in understanding and treating a condition or injury,” Derek said.
In addition to regularly attending workshops and conferences, which add new skills and a deeper understanding of the latest massage techniques and philosophies, Derek is now also studying myotherapy, an advanced diploma of remedial massage.
Derek said the benefits of massage are becoming more widely appreciated.
“Massage stretches muscles, inhibits muscle spasm, increases flexibility and helps break down scar tissue. Therefore it can help recovery from injury or surgery.
“Neck and shoulder massage can help alleviate repetitive strain injuries resulting from poor posture or sitting for long periods of time,” he added.
“If you are feeling tired or stressed then relaxation massage will ease away the tension. It’s great for treating headaches and sore backs.”
Among the benefits of moving to the more central Woori Yallock location are well set-up treatment rooms with comfortable, modern equipment and the flexibility of opening two nights a week for after-hours appointments.
One of Derek’s philosophies is “… get back on your bike and enjoy life!” Why wait? Human Balance is open for business at Shop 7/1385 Healesville-Koo Wee Rup Road, Woori Yallock. Phone 5964 7866 or 0401 065 802 for an appointment.
