Day marks pioneer past

By Melissa Meehan
ENJOY a fun-filled Australia Day Weekend in the Yarra Valley.
On Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 January, Gulf Station at Yarra Glen will be hosting the massive, family friendly, Yarra Valley Australia Day Weekend Festival.
The oldest surviving farm in Victoria and a vivid reminder of the pioneer past, Gulf Station’s 24 hectares will come alive in a celebration of Australia Day.
Visitors can watch the sheep dog trials and working horse displays, take a cart ride around our new family farm trails, be entertained by characters from the Wiggles, enjoy fun and games or learn how to crack a stockman’s whip, milk a cow, make butter by hand and make bread.
For the more adventurous there are helicopter rides over the picturesque Yarra Valley.
It is the perfect place for families to enjoy a great day out and meet a huge range of animals from rare pigs to highland cattle, sheep, goats and chooks.
Previously known as the Working Horses Festival, this year the expanded Australia Day Weekend Festival will be more jammed packed than ever before.
There will be a kids’ fun zone with music, crafts and games, an animal nursery and live stage entertainment from favourites such as Wiggles characters Wags the Dog and Captain Feathersword along with live music and an old fashioned bush band.
Making the most of what the Yarra Valley has to offer, there will be local gourmet food and wine available along with a traditional Aussie barbecue.
National Trust CEO Martin Purslow said that the day was perfect for family and friends to experience a fun and exciting festival on the special Australian holiday.
“The expansion of our ever popular working horses festival, focusing on fun family friendly activity for all ages, is a perfect way for the community to use our heritage and celebrate what it means to be an Aussie in the spectacular Yarra Valley,” Mr Purslow said.
The National Trust is a non-government community funded organisation that is dedicated to preserving cultural heritage.
