THE Kilsyth Cobras have finally put together a complete display, which is sure to put the rest of the basketball league on notice. In a commanding performance the Cobras defeated the Nunawading Spectres 108-88 in the SEABL.
Leading throughout the game their intentions were made very clear in the second quarter as Cobras import Brad Bridgewater throw down a monstrous dunk over 7’4” Spectre Jason Eversytn.
Chris Payne was just two assists shy of a triple double with 25 pts, 11 rebounds and 8 assists and was backed up by Chris Cameron 23 pts and 7 rbds as the Cobras put on a clinic against their more fancied opponents.
In a close first half the Cobras were made to work for every point but after shooting 40 per cent from the field getting up over 50 shots, the Cobras took a 6 point lead into the break. The third quarter was a telling one for the Cobras outscoring the Spectres 35-16.
The game was over at three-quarter time, which allowed coach Grant Wallace to get some of the rookies on to the floor for some game time. Shane Bright return for the Cobras and helped balance the attack against his former club as he played quality minutes behind starting point guard Jon Lee. Bright has replaced the injured David Smith in the line-up while he recovers from ankle surgery.
The impressive display will likely move the 5-8 Cobras to third on the South Ladder with North West Tasmania likely to drop both games this weekend. The Cobras have now won 3 of their last 4 with their only loss coming at the hands of Nunawading two weeks ago.
The Cobras next objective is to move above .500 for the first time this season and look to cement a place in the top 4. Jon Croft 15 pts, Adam Jackson 15pts and Captain DJ Taylor 13 pts also made big contribution to the game.
The Kilsyth Lady Cobras also continued with impressive run and moved to 7-6 with a win over the Nunawading Spectres 76-61. Desiree Glaubitz made an instant impact in her return to the Snakepit making her teammates better and scoring 14 pts including an explosive coast-to-coast basket in the fourth and deciding quarter.
The Lady Cobras were again led by import Abby Schrader 19pts and 10rbds who continues to get the job done week in week out. Abby and Desiree were well supported by first year SEABL player Hayley Moffatt with 10 pts, Lil Keane 9 points with Sarah Parsons and Erica McMenamin each contributing 8 points.
The Lady Cobras were able to hold off the Nunawading Spectes shooting a respectable 40 per cent from the field and forcing 22 turnovers by the Spectres which were turned into 29 Lady Cobras points.
The Lady Cobras travel to Brisbane next weekend to take on the Southern Districts Spartans in their first of two trips to the Sunshine state. The Cobras beat the Spartans by 1 point at home in Round 3.
The club takes on the Frankston Blues this Sunday, May 20 at the Snakepit with the Cobras looking to celebrate Adam Jackson’s 200th SEABL game. Tip-off is scheduled for 2.30pm. Keep up to date with all the Kilsyth Basketball News at www.kilsythbasketball.com.au.
