YARRA Valley Water customers have literally been showered with water-efficient showerheads, with over 80,000 showerheads swapped through the water utility’s Showerhead Exchange Program.
The program, which began in 2006, provides existing home owners with up to two, free 3-star showerheads in exchange for older, less efficient models.
According to Yarra Valley Water’s managing director, Tony Kelly, the 80,000 showerheads exchanged through the program are expected to save 960 million litres of water and 16 million kilograms of greenhouse gas emissions each year.
“Older style showerheads can use between 15 and 20 litres of water per minute, compared to a 3-star showerhead that uses only nine litres per minute,” said Mr Kelly.
“By installing a water efficient showerhead, a family of three can save 25,000 litres of water per year. Plus, the energy saved would run a 60 watt light bulb continuously for almost 18 months.”
He said the response from customers was fantastic.
“Our customers have recognised that water efficient showerheads are a great way to save water, energy, greenhouse gas emissions and money,” Mr Kelly said.
According to Mr Kelly, 30 per cent of water in an average Melbourne household is used in the shower, so the Yarra Valley Water Showerhead Exchange Program is a great way to help reduce water consumption.
