HEALESVILLE police are appealing to motorists to take care when driving in wintry conditions after a fatal crash in Badger Creek last week.
Twenty-one year old Robert Neason died as the result of injuries received when his car crashed into a tree in Badger Creek Road at 6.30pm on Monday 23 June.
Mr Neason, who lived in nearby Hanover Road, was treated at the scene before being airlifted from Lilydale to The Alfred hospital. He underwent emergency surgery but died in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Sergeant Tony Van Gorp of Healesville police said the air ambulance was unable to land at the Healesville helipad because of the hazardous weather conditions at the time.
He praised the efforts of local CFA and SES volunteers and paramedics who worked to save the young man.
“The driver, who was alone in the vehicle, was seriously injured,” Sgt Van Gorp said.
“The efforts of the emergency service personnel at the scene in wet and difficult circumstances was outstanding.
“It’s terribly sad that we have a tragic outcome.
“The loss of a 21-year-old man in his prime is always devastating for family and friends and I am sure a lot of the SES and CFA volunteers who were there on that night would be saddened also by what’s happened,” he said.
Sgt Van Gorp said Mr Neason was driving east on Badger Creek Road when his car lost control and struck a tree near the intersection of Flora Avenue.
“Shortly after the collision another vehicle also travelling east had a minor secondary collision with the wrecked vehicle,” he said.
While investigations by the Major Collision Investigation Unit are underway into the circumstances of the crash, Sgt Van Gorp said neither speed nor alcohol appeared to be a factor in the crash.
“Particularly at this time of the year, motorists driving in such hazardous conditions need to exercise extra care on wet and slippery roads,” he said.
Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash, or who saw Mr Neason’s red Mazda 121 in Badger Creek Road prior to the collision to contact them on 5962 4422.
Robert Neason grew up in Healesville and was involved in local sport and community events over the years.
His funeral service was due to be held at Le Pine Heritage funeral parlour in Healesville yesterday (Monday) afternoon.
