Fast track delivery

By Melissa Meehan
PROUD parents Ashley and Lisa Wraith-Tenson welcomed daughter Maiya Ashley into the world in a flurry of excitement.
Unlike the birth of the couple’s three other children, Maiya’s birth became a little complicated when she could not wait to make her appearance into the world, forcing dad Ashley to deliver her in their Healesville family home.
New mum Lisa said she had experienced contractions throughout the day but after past pregnancies decided to ignore them.
“After having three other kids, I thought nothing of them, they were only minor,” Lisa said.
Lisa attended her regular appointment at the Healesville Hospital at 4pm.
“They were really busy, so I said I would come back after organising the kids’ dinner,” Lisa said.
“But obviously that never happened.”
At 5.30pm Lisa’s contractions became more frequent.
“At around 6 o’clock I thought, she’s coming tonight,” Lisa said.
Ashley then called the hospital to say they were on their way.
“But by the time I hung up the phone and turned around, Lisa said there was no way she would make it,” Ashley said.
After calling back the hospital to say the baby was not going to wait until they got to the hospital, Ashley called 000.
“The guy on the other end of the line was great, he talked me through the whole thing,” Ashley said, “which was great because I fainted at every one of the other births.”
Maiya was born at 6.50pm and the ambulance arrived 10 minutes later.
Both parents said that going through three births previously helped them remain calm throughout the ordeal.
“But it’s quite scary to think if something goes wrong that you have no backup,” Ashley said.
Maiya Ashley was named after her dad, entering the world at 4.2 kilograms.
