Slippery wickets put cricket on hold

ROUND 2 of senior Yarra Valley Cricket got underway on Saturday under leaden skies after considerable rains overnight on Friday.
A number of venues proved unplayable when umpires and players arrived and these matches were cancelled without a ball being bowled.
In the matches that commenced only a couple were able to be completed as midafternoon rain affected the other games.
In Strachan Shield, Healesville almost stole a victory in the short time available against Yarra Junction after Julian Russell bowled well in his 10 overs to take 3/7.
Healesville’s Pearce took 5/9 to have Yarra Junction out for just 54 and Healesville were 0/23 when rain halted play for the day.
Roger Fernando had grabbed two wickets for Yarra Panthers in Silvan’s innings of 5/167 with Gary Frankovic scoring 36.
Coldstream’s Scott Reece with 29 in Coldstream’s 5/151 was heading to a potential 200 score when rain intervened against Wandin.
In Strachan Shield Reserve, Mt Evelyn’s Zac Booth bowled well taking 5/22 in dismissing Warburton for just 52.
Woori Yallock’s John Ferguson had 2/8 in Seville’s 3/57.
In the Finger Trophy, Aura Vale 10/124, D. Carlisle, 67 not out, Powelltown’s Brendon Green bowled well for four wickets for just 31 and Michael Peggie also took four wickets.
Powelltown batted a full innings to get 10/171. Simpson 75, Green 43, were the best with the bat. For Aura Vale, Boorer and Swinburne both took three wickets.
Marysville in their first home match in the YVCA hosted Kinglake who batted first and reached 6/110cc, J Morgan 49, Ben MunnGibbs 26, with J. Stewart and K. Beard both taking 2/22 for Marysville.
In reply, the Marysville team were 3/78 with T. Culhane on 30 when rain stopped play.
Hoddles Creek 7/118, J. Derix 30, J. Devisser 25, Mick Young 3/19, drew with Launching Place.
Gruyere District were 3/74 with Brad Irvine on 24 and Luke Sarre undefeated on 27 when rain called play to an end with Yarra Glen’s Braden on 2/13.
The Yarra Valley Juniors also got under way on Saturday in day one of the first round. Rain affected some matches with all to be completed next Saturday.

The YVCA is planning a cricket tour to Sri Lanka next autumn and a Sausage Sizzle information meeting will be held at Seville from noon on Sunday, 16 October.
