SECURITY has been ramped up at the Warburton-Millgrove Sports Club following yet another burglary.
Club treasurer Rob Morter said the latest break-in three weeks ago forced the club’s hand.
“This is the sixth or seventh burglary over the last two years and every time it happens it costs us, the shire and the community,” a clearly frustrated Mr Morter told the Mail.
The club has been plagued by break-ins with thieves smashing large windows at the front of the clubrooms to steal what are relatively small amounts of alcohol and other “goodies”.
The club has had to pour money into security cameras over the past year or so and Mr Morter said the cost to the shire of replacing the glass each time would by now be several thousand dollars.
“It’s the inconvenience of having to have people, our volunteers, come down here when the alarm goes off in the middle of the night, and the fact that we are now having to spend even more to try to stop them,” Mr Morter said.
The Warburton Community Bank (Bendigo Bank branch) has again come to the party with funds for high-tech indoor and outdoor security cameras with high sensitivity motion detection and recording capability.
But branch manager Darren Pennington is not impressed, however.
“It’s disapointing when the community works together to get these facilities. Obviously we support these community clubs and there are a lot of volunteers putting a lot of time in to have these people just disregard that effort. It’s money that could be spend on other community projects,” Mr Pennington said.
