Rock and rollers

By Kath Gannaway
WHEN Greg and Jackie Shepherd set about raising money to build a sports oval at the Mountain District Christian School at Monbulk, the first thing they thought of was hot rods and rock’n’roll music.
It was a natural inclination for the car and rock‘n’roll enthusiasts.
What has evolved is the 1st Mountain District Car and Bike Show… and a whole lot more.
The event includes competitions for hot rods, classic and custom cars and bikes, utes and Chev/F-Trucks. Live bands, kids entertainment, food stalls and a trade alley are all geared to providing a full day of affordable entertainment for families.
There are 18 categories of car trophies including a celebrity choice which will be judged by actor John Wood.
“We’re expecting between 200 and 300 cars and bikes to go on show so there will be plenty for enthusiasts to see,” Ms Shepherd said.
The Fender Benders, local band the Flying Saucers and Paulie and the 56 Jam Cans will provide live entertainment from 11am and there will be rides and other entertainment for the kids and plenty of great food stalls.
An added attraction is an old-fashioned drive-in film which starts at dusk.
Appropriately, they have chosen the Disney cartoon feature Cars as a film which will appeal to the whole family.
There is no entry fee for the public, with gates opening at 10am but there is a $5 per car fee for the drive-in, or $2 for film-goers on foot.
They are keen to hear from car or bike owners who would like to add their vehicle to the display and from anyone who would like to help as sponsors of the event.
The 1st Mountain District Car and Bike Show will be held at the Yarra Valley Archery Park in Launching Place on Saturday, 10 February.
