UNDER ideal weather conditions, the opening of the Healesville Bowling Club’s season for 200506 took place on Sunday, 25 September with about 90 bowlers representing members and visitors from around the Yarra Valley region.
President Robert Meyers introduced the dignitaries who represented the Royal Victorian Bowling Association, Yarra Valley Bowling Association and the Mountain Valley District League Bowling Association.
After the opening address, councillor Gillian Jolly of the VLBA Group 9 was invited to roll the jack on the green followed by councillor Bob Griffiths, of the RVBA who rolled the first bowl of the day declaring “the season is now open”.
After several hours of entertaining bowls, all adjourned to the clubhouse where, after toasting the Queen and the respective organisations, plus suitable responses, a delightful afternoon tea was served by members of the ladies bowling club.
Mr Ted Upton from the Healesville Bowling Club, assisted by David Dungan of Sticks Winery Yarra Glen, fanned the cards to select the winners of the day, which were John Taylor, Helen Etty, Gordon Watkins and Keith Thomas.
Chairman Alan Devlin thanked all in attendance for supporting the event, with a special mention to all those people whose effort made the day such a success. The opening day concluded with the presentation of flowers to the lady guests.
