Yarra Valley teams vie for VMCU Shield glory

By Melissa Donchi
VICTORIA’S most prestigious junior cricket carnival kicked off yesterday with three Yarra Valley teams competing.
The 2006-07 VMCU Shield Junior Carnival will see Yarra Valley teams competing against Ferntree Gully, Dandenong District and Ringwood District among others.
Yarra Valley Cricket Association spokesman Keith Thompson said Yarra Valley teams had been training extensively since October last year.
“All three teams have had additional training sessions in November and December,” Mr Thompson said.
“Certainly, the U14s and U16s have competed in the Region 8 competition as a build-up to this current carnival.”
Yarra Valley home matches will be played at Woori Yallock for U16s, Queens Park in Healesville for the U14s and Yarra Junction for the U12s.
The Victorian Metropolitan Cricket Union (VMCU) junior carnival is widely considered a significant sporting event with the origins of the annual showcase dating back to the early 1980s.
Yarra Valley teams have participated in the competition for more than 15 years since the beginning of the carnival.
Each year representative teams from affiliates of the VMCU and others meet over two weeks in mid January to determine premiership winners in all three competition age groups.
The home and away series will conclude on January 21 with the final series following from then.
