First twodayer gets underway

THE first two-day match of the season got underway on Saturday with overcast conditions, which caused problems with light at the end of the day in many matches.
In the Strachan Shield, Yarra Junction playing host to Coldstream batted first and was dismissed for 183 with Steve Flutter top scoring with a fine 74 and Glen Thompson 31. Coldstream’s bowlers were led by Scott Reece with 4/94 and N. Cuthbertson on 3/19.
Silvan travelled to Warburton and after batting first was all out for a small total of 128. Jamie Cornford, undefeated on 32, and Clint Sharman 39 were the best. Warburton Millgrove in reply at stumps are 1/8.
Seville welcomed Wandin to the Chip with a strong display from their bowlers dismissing the visitors for just 116 runs. W. Ross on 33 was the top scorer while Andrew Kay bowled well in taking 4/19.
He was well assisted by Craig Atkins, Dean Troyhan and Alex McCormick. In reply Seville are in a little trouble at 3/34.
Healesville’s Queen’s Park was the venue for the game against Woori Yallock with Healesville taking to the crease first and being disappointed with a low score of 10/178.
Glenn Powell on 52 was the leading scorer. Best bowling for Woori Yallock came from Andrew Sharp 3/43 and Michael King 3/54. At stumps Woori Yallock was 0/0.
Disappointingly in the Yarra Panthers v Mt Evelyn match no scores were received, penalties applied.
In Strachan Shield Reserve, the best individual performances came from Norm Spakman with 3/8 for Yarra Junction against Coldstream, Nathan Ingham 3/18 and 30 runs for Warburton Millgrove against Silvan and Mark Cornford 3/9 for Silvan.
Seville’s John Aumann made a nice 77 against Mt Evelyn while Peter Kerr took 3/36 for the Mount.
Healesville with a score 9/293 were led by Scott Hamer on 81 not out, Tom Horner, 65, Rod Aitken, 46, and Woori Yallock’s John Ferguson who took 3/80.
Other notable performances in Strachan Shield 3 and Strachan Shield 4 were Colin Voigt taking 4/6, M. Macklin making 104 for Launch United and Woori Yallock’s Paul Broussard 5/30 and scoring 36.
In Wandin’s 5/232cc it was ‘the old chaps’ in John King on 107 and Paul Long on 69, leading the way.
In the RA Finger Trophy matches, also two-day games, Gruyere District were 8/48 in reply to Aura Vale 10/64, with Aura Vale’s S. Hall taking 5/22 and Gruyere’s Craig Cooper 5/12 proving it was a bowler’s day.
Hoddles Creek have a first innings lead over Marysville in their match at Hoddles Creek with the home side 5/171.
B. Derix was 98 after the visitors, Marysville, were dismissed for just 78 runs with Jeff Crewe 3/2, J. Ridd 2/14 and J. Smits 2/22.
Yarra Glen with 6/101, N. Tucker 50 and David McMahon 4/39, have a first innings lead over Kinglake 10/45 with J. Morgan 20, James Campion 4/13 and J. Orren 3/7.
Launching Place playing Powelltown dismissed them for 259 with B. Simpson 56, Brett Mitchell 63, G. McRorie 51 and A. Bryan 3/55.
Next Sunday, 6 November, sees the first round of the VCCL Platypus Sporting Goods Under 21 competition. Healesville Cricket Club’s Julian Russell is the only YVCA representative in the Region 8 side and we congratulate Julian on his selection and on being appointed vice captain.
Match times are 10.15am to 5.30pm at the Hallam Oval just off Frawley Road.
