WITH the flick of a switch, more than $30,000 worth of new lighting towers illuminated the Warburton Bowling Club greens last Thursday night.
“It was an occasion worth celebrating for the club whose 100 members will now be able to play and host regular night pennant games, and for working members of the community who will be able to join in.
Bob Griffiths, club treasurer and one of the project managers for the night light project, said the lights would effectively put more people on the greens.
“This little club is a powerhouse in the Yarra Valley and a social hub for this community. For anyone who wants to come along, these new lights will enhance all that,” he said.
He thanked club members, Peter Woods, Dick Le Tet, Paul Caneva and the late Dick Armitage for their role in developing and seeing the project through, including getting funding from the Shire of Yarra Ranges and the Warburton Community Bank.
The Shire of Yarra Ranges contributed $12,500 to the project and the Warburton Community Bank contributed $18,000.
Electrical contractor Jim Fox, Mr Woods, representing the Shire, and bank chairman, Geoff Vickers, joined men’s club president, Brian Watt and ladies club president, Betty Hawkins, in sending the first bowls down under brilliant conditions.
Club secretary, Paul Bird, said the club is anticipating an increase in membership, starting with a series of introductory bowls night once daylight saving comes in.
