THE Yarra Valley Racecourse precinct will undergo a massive transformation as part of a long-term revitalisation project funded by the State Government.
The racecourse has received a $250,000 grant after it applied for the funding last year to develop a multi-purpose centre.
The first meeting with the council and race club representatives was held last week and racing manager Brett Shambrook said they would look to get the community involved with the project.
“So far we’ve appointed the master planning consultants and had our first meeting to get the ball rolling, but we’re really looking forward to hearing from community groups who are interested in the centre,” Mr Shambrook said.
“It’s a major community asset and we would like to get more use of what is an impressive facility.”
So far everyone from pony clubs to landcare groups have been consulted and the project appears to have received widespread support.
“I don’t think it’s hard to see the benefits a project like this can bring to Yarra Glen,” Mr Shambrook said.
“It’s definitely a good opportunity for a community asset such as the racing centre to play a much stronger and pivotal role in the community.”
The project is likely to include a three to four star hotel with accommodation, social club and TAB, a viticulture and winery operated by NMIT, an equestrian centre and walking trails and other public open space links with the Yarra Glen community.
Vice president of Yarra Glen Chamber of Commerce, Chris Lamacraft said he was excited about what the project could do for the community.
“It really is going to be a collaboration between the community and business world of Yarra Glen,” Mr Lamacraft said.
“It will allow the racing centre to cater for the crowds while at the same time attracting more people into the town.”
Mr Shambrook believes the revitalisation project will deliver significant benefits to the community, with the new facilities creating more local opportunities and a social environment.
“The project recognises and extends the role of the Yarra Valley Racecourse as significant community asset and a major focal point for community activity,” Mr Shambrook said.
“Until recently, the racecourse has been a closed gate environment and we want to fling open the gates and get as many groups involved as possible.”
