Gulf calf birth

By Melissa Meehan
GULF Station in Yarra Glen produced its first Highland calf born at the station last Thursday.
The property’s Highland cattle were donated by National Trust employee Clemens Unger and his family.
Mr Unger is calling for members of the community to put forward their suggestions for the name of the calf and says that the name will be unveiled at the opening of the property’s new Farm Experience Trail next month.
Mr Unger said that the station’s relationship with Highland cattle is in line with the Scottish theme of the property to raise rare breeds.
Gulf Station was the most successful pastoral station in the Yarra Valley.
Mr Unger said that the birth of the calf is in line with the introduction of the new Farm Experience Trail that is aimed at developing the Gulf Station as a tourist destination for international, interstate and local tourists.
The trail will aim to give tourists the experience of early settler farming life.
“In the age of the PlayStation we have to offer something extra,” Mr Unger said.
The trail will include a horse and cart tour, pony rides and picnic facilities as well as focusing on the historical aspect of farming life.
Mr Unger said that the aim of the changes at the station is to produce the most fun, best value family day out in Melbourne.
He said that the station is the only place in the region that under 18-year-old visitors can receive free entry.
“Families these days live on a budget,” Mr Unger said.
“The station will offer a taste of living history rather than static examples.”
Suggestions for the name of the male calf should be emailed before 30 November to clemens.unger@nattrust.com.au.
