MORE than 200 students were evacuated from classrooms at Upper Yarra Secondary College on Thursday morning after a gas leak was detected in the school’s science wing.
CFA Brigade support officer Diana Ferguson said firefighters wearing breathing apparatus acted quickly to secure the scene.
She said no one was injured during the incident but that police and ambulance had attended as a precaution.
Incident controller Leonie Turner of Yarra Junction CFA said the brigade was notified of the leak just before 10am.
She congratulated teachers and students at the school who she said had acted quickly to put their emergency management plan into action.
“They did a really good job; everything was isolated and the wing was evacuated.”
School principal Brian Way said he was also happy with the response.
