Hope for Lost Boy Fades
EXPERIENCED bushmen and local police believe that there is little hope of finding an 8-year-old boy who has been missing since 4.30pm on Tuesday.
They are convinced that he fell into the river and that his body is snagged in deep water.
The boy, John Gregory Davenport of Brisbane Parade was last seen by school mates spear fishing off a rock in the river near the Warburton Recreation Reserve.
When he failed to return home for tea his parents became alarmed and contacted local police. All night searchers failed to locate the boy.
At daylight the fire bell was sounded and 35 volunteers including experienced bushmen led by Senior Constable Tarrant formed a search party and continued searching.
Tarrant traced the boy’s movements up until he was last seen fishing from a rock in the Yarra. The search increased to 50 men, ably supplied with a continual supply of hot tea by local women.
Searchers waded waist deep in icy cold water using boat hooks but failed to find any trace of the boy.
At 4pm on Wednesday the search was abandoned after Tarrant conferred with local bushmen who know the river well.
Several searchers however, refused to give up – Jack Lewis formed a party on Wednesday night and with the aid of a spotlight combed the nearby hills.

Nicholson St. Improvement
THE lawns laid down by the council on the north side of Nicholson St. have so far apparently survived the outspoken criticism voiced in various quarters and the stray dog and cattle nuisance.
Thanks to the attention given by adjacent business people the grass is beginning to make a good show.
