THE Yarra Valley Mountain District Football League (YVMDFL) will host a Lightning Premiership on Saturday, 25 March at both the Gembrook and Emerald (Avonsleigh) grounds.
League chief executive officer Ben O’Brien stated said the event was something the league had looked at for the past couple of years, based primarily on feedback received from other country football/netball leagues, which have held their own versions, as well as regular requests from clubs seeking practice matches at this time of year.
“We are always keen to try new concepts, and we think the lightning premiership will be of benefit to the clubs competing and followers of the YVMDFL, all of whom are keen for the season to kick off in April,” Mr O’Brien said.
He said the 15 competing clubs have been split into five groups of three, with three groups playing at Gembrook, and two at Avonsleigh.
All matches will comprise 15-minute halves.
With the round-robin format, clubs are guaranteed two matches at least.
With finals also to be played.
Netball is also featuring, with a similar round-robin competition being run alongside the football.
“We have mixed up the groups, and have not based them on our first or second divisions,” Mr O’Brien said.
“We were also happy that Coldstream Football Club has accepted our invitation to take part in this new concept for the YVMDFL, and we hope that the competition becomes a regular part of our season in the coming years.”
