A HEALESVILLE man who cut down trees in Queen’s Park has been fined $1000.
Shire of Yarra Ranges councillor Jeanette McRae said the fine served as a warning that illegal removal of trees and vegetation would not be tolerated by the shire.
She congratulated Healesville residents who reported the man.
The shire mounted an investigation into the removal of a number of mature eucalypts from along Graceburn Avenue following reports from members of the public.
“The fact we have been able to identify the individual responsible and have enforced a hefty fine should serve as an example to the small minority of people who think it’s okay to illegally remove vegetation,” Cr McRae said.
She said the shire’s planning scheme protected most native vegetation and some exotic species and that planning permits were often required for tree and vegetation removal.
“If people are considering removing vegetation they need to first consult with the council to find out if a planning permit is required,” she said.
