P-plater ‘hit 200km/h’

A ‘P’ PLATE driver clocked doing more than 200km/h on Maroondah Highway near Healesville, another doing 119km/h in a 90km/h zone at Seville and an unlicensed driver doing 100km/h in a 60km/h zone at Wandin are among 64 people charged with traffic offences in Yarra Ranges over the weekend.
In the three day operation from 24 to 26 November Yarra Ranges and Maroondah Traffic Management Units supported by police from Belgrave, Mooroolbark, Monbulk and Lilydale police stations, checked 874 drivers.
Eight people were charged in relation to drink driving offences.
The P plate driver was clocked doing 205 kph in a high performance vehicle, police say he was not approved to drive.
Other excessive speeds were recorded at Upper Ferntree gully where a driver was doing 120kph in a 70 zone on Burwood Highway and in another area where a driver was clocked at 126kph in an 80 zone.
The operation was in support of the Remove All Impaired Driver ‘RAID’, and is part of ongoing operations in the area.
