THE fashion stakes and the chance to lay a bet on the big one in Melbourne were definite highlights of Cup Day at Yarra Glen.
More than 8000 people opted for the more relaxed atmosphere of harness racing at the Yarra Valley Racing Centre to celebrate Melbourne’s premier race day.
“The good thing for punters is having access to the TAB and the bookmakers on the day,” said YVRC marketing manager Brian Doyle.
Fran Floyd said the fashions on the field reflected the Spring racing fascination with fashion and fun.
“Despite the fact it was freezing the fashions were very summery and very feminine with lots of colour and soft fabrics.”
As in Melbourne, Ms Floyd said fascinators won out over hats.
“People definitely make an effort and for a lot of people I think the fashions are the highlight of the day.”
Fashion winners were Lizzy Collins of Croydon, Carlie Burton of Coldstream and Moya Ellem of Macleod.
The next meeting at Yarra Glen is a thoroughbred meeting on Sunday, 19 November.
The YVRC Christmas program then gets underway with meetings on 2 and 22 December providing a great opportunity for Christmas break-ups and get-togethers.
