LITERACY has received a huge boost at Yarra Junction Primary School with a $50,000 refurbishment and extension to the school library and a significant increase in new books.
“Reading is the number one education skill children must have before they leave school,” principal Chris Thomas said.
“The library is a key facility we have in the school and it has to be well-resourced and have the type of material that entices the kids to want to read,” he said.
For boys, books about dinosaurs and cars still rate high on their list of good reading, while Mr Thomas said girls enjoy novels.
“We still get a lot of girls who read Enid Blyton such as the Famous Five series.”
Improvements to the library, funded by a $50,000 Federal Government grant, include a reading corner, computer area, display areas, an electronic whiteboard and new books bringing the library’s total to 5000 books.
As part of Education Week the school will hold a literacy and numeracy night on Wednesday, 10 May, Yarra Ranges mayor and former student, Monika Keane, will also be a special guest.
Students will undertake spelling and maths tests aimed at trying to beat their personal bests in numeracy and literacy.
