HEALESVILLE RSL’s Light Horse Bistro offers friendly, relaxed dining with a choice and quality of meals that meets the high expectations of visitors to the Yarra Valley’s favourite foodie township.
RSL manager and former Healesville restrateur Gary Slater and his team set out over a year ago to lift the profile of the bistro which is located in Healesville’s increasingly busy East End, and operates in what is a deliciously competitive market.
“We see the venue as a place for family and friends to meet, eat and play,” said Mr Slater.
“We have always had a strong local following and our aim is to build on the relaxed, friendly atmosphere with a quality dining experience.
“These days people have so much choice, you have to provide good food and service to ensure people keep coming back,” he said.
With three highly experienced chefs on staff, Mr Slater said the Light Horse Bistro had lifted its standards of presentation and offered an excellent menu.
“We have the traditional meals such as parmiagana, roasts, grain-fed steaks and fish and chips, but we have introduced other dishes which change seasonally, as well as a good choice of specials,” Mr Slater said.
The specials board includes such dishes as marinated lamb rump with pita bread and salad, ham and mushroom pie, smoked Caesar salad and, as an entrée, duck stuffed zucchini florets with capsicum pesto and rocket salad.
Friday night is a feast for seafood fans. On offer is a selection of seafood platters ranging from $28 for a platter for one, to $75 for a platter for three.
Pan-fried crispy skin salmon, linguine marinara with a mouth-watering medley of seafood, and delicious garlic prawns, are also popular seafood dishes.
The spacious bistro area is complemented by an alfresco-style deck which includes a play area for children.
For adults who also enjoy the chance to play a little, Healesville RSL has recently installed a TAB which launches on Friday 13 January, and later in the year will be hosting a revamped, more user-friendly Keno with the promise of a larger prize pay out.
Bingo is held on Monday nights and Friday afternoons and the RSL is also now home to a number of social groups including a local bridge club, U3A and other day clubs.
Community members are welcome on the second Tuesday morning of each month to enjoy Morning Melodies and other evening entertainment events throughout the year.
Healesville RSL is very much a place for family and friends – local and visiting – to meet, eat and play in Healesville.
