THE Yarra Glen community will have plenty to sing about on Sunday 18 December.
Three significant events are planned as Christmas approaches starting with the official opening of the new adventure playground at 6pm, followed by an opening ceremony for the refurbished Memorial Hall and the annual Carols By Candlelight get-together.
Yarra Ranges Council and Yarra Glen churches have organised the event which comes as a timely Christmas present with Yarra Glen Primary School students who had a preview of the playground last week keen to make the most of the fantastic new equipment over the school holidays.
The community is invited to enjoy free family entertainment, including a sausage sizzle, between 5pm and 7pm as part of the official celebrations, before pulling up a rug for the annual carols event at 7.30pm.
While no doubt there will be many important people at the celebration this year, Santa is one VIP who is assured of a big welcome.
The carols program this year features a range of local singers including Sarah Fullerton from local band Time Unlimited, William and Robbie Verhagen, opera singer Beth Williams, 18-year-old Jackson Brazier, Kelly Sullivan, Karen Gilling and Robyn Wilson.
The Yarra Glen Primary School Choir will also perform.
Yarra Ranges Ryrie Ward representative councillor Jeanette McRae said the combined facility in the heart of the township was a valuable community asset.
“These facilities have been made possible by the goodwill of so many people and organisations and I would really encourage people to come along and see what wonderful assets they are for the local community,” she said.
The new hall will be pressed into action if the weather turns wet.
