BASKETBALL is enjoying resurgence in Healesville and with a 33 per cent increase reported in junior participation, spokesperson for Healesville Hornets Basketball Club, Ben Turner says the future looks bright.
As part of the push to build basketball in Healesville the club has launched a new logo which will be seen on singlets, basketballs and flyers over the next few months giving the Hornets a brand to market in the local community.
“In time we hope children will recognise the logo and identify with it now that the Hornets means basketball in Healesville,” Mr Turner said.
Monday nights currently hold competitions for under 8/10 mixed, under 12 mixed, under 14 mixed and Over 28 women and Wednesday nights hold the Aussie Hoops Oz Ball program for 5-10 year olds, 17 and under mixed and open mixed.
After the holidays the Healesville Hornets Basketball Club will be launching a “girls only” competition for under 12s and under 14s to be run on a Wednesday night.
“We have identified that there are fewer opportunities for girls to play sport in Healesville and as an association we are looking to provide more participation opportunities. This program will provide one of the only girls only sporting competitions in Healesville.
Senior basketball is also back and providing opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to participate. Mr Turner said the Monday night over 28’s competition provides a fun, friendly and competitive basketball competition. Places are still available for teams and individuals to enter in the current season. The current mixed basketball season concluded last week and will begin once again after the school holidays providing people of all ages the opportunity to participate in a competition for mixed ages and abilities.
Aussie Hoops Oz Ball continues to run successfully, with over 200 children participating in the program in the last two years.
“This program has become the starting point of many of the junior competition’s participants,” Mr Turner said.
The Healesville Basketball Association and Healesville Hornets Basketball Club look forward to welcoming all new members and teams.
