Some cool cricketers

By Mara Pattison-Sowden
YARRA Junction Cricket Club members and their families knew how to keep cool on Sunday.
With the mercury hitting almost 40 degrees, the club held its annual raft race down the Yarra River.
A record number of 40 teams made their way down the river, with the fastest rowers taking first prize at 25 minutes.
The time trial began on the river at Station Road in Wesburn and finished at Doon Reserve in Yarra Junction.
The day was more fun than competitive, with cricket captain Brad Jones showing his men how not to row a canoe.
Jones’ team with Stuart Thompson and Beau Campbell took more than two hours to complete and two of them were eventually disqualified after getting out of the canoe and walking the rest of the way to the reserve.
Top prizes went to Rowan and Callan who came first in the men’s time with 25 minutes, Debbie and Donna took out the women’s time with 27 minutes, Norman Spakman and Rachel took 26 minutes to win the adult/child division and Leigh and Laura Newstead took 28 minutes in the mixed division.
