IT seemed like half of Lilydale gathered for the awaited construction of the Warburton Rail Trail bridge over Maroondah Highway.
They came prepared for a long stay, with rugs, thermos and food.
The Rail Trail now has a safer path for walkers and cyclists across the busy Maroondah Highway near Queen Road, linking Lilydale train station with the Mount Evelyn township and right up to Warburton.
Commuters have watched the construction of the bridge over the past few months, where it was taken from the Coldstream truck stop and lifted onto trucks and relocated to its new location on Saturday 15 January.
Mount Evelyn photographer Greg Carrick captured the new 143 tonne bridge being lifted into place at 3am, ready to be bolted down. It will soon be ready for use by walkers and cyclists.
