HEALESVILLE Sanctuary’s conservation campaign, Wipe for Wildlife, aims to raise awareness on the importance of maintaining our native wildlife’s habitat through the promotion of the use of recycled toilet paper.
The sanctuary is ramping up its Wipe campaign after the United Nations recognsied 2011 as the International Year of the Forest.
The International Year of the Forest celebrates not only the beauty and importance of our forests but also the central role of people in sustainable management, conservation and development of our world’s forests.
Australia’s forests are extremely diverse, providing a home for between seven and ten per cent of the world’s species, many of which occur nowhere else.
Many Australians currently use non-recycled toilet paper which equates to the loss of over 6.7 million trees from the ground every year.
Making the switch to using recycled toilet paper (made from post-consumer waste such as office paper) is an example of a local action that can contribute to the global goal of conserving the world’s forests.
