Doctor to carry baton

FOUNDER of the Gawler Foundation at Yarra Junction, Dr Ian Gawler, will carry the Queen’s Baton in Cardinia on Thursday, 2 March.
Dr Gawler was a keen decathlon athlete, competing at state and national level before he was diagnosed with “incurable bone cancer” and had his left leg amputated nearly 30 years ago.
He overcame the cancer and, in 1981, established the foundation which is dedicated to helping people with cancer and other serious illness, and their families, as well as promoting the well-being of the community.
With a gift for translating ancient wisdom into a modern, accessible context, and having appeared widely in the media, Dr Gawler has played a major role in popularising meditation and other mind-body medicine techniques in the Western world.
He has had close ties to several Olympians, including Sydney gold medal winner Debbie Flintoff King and athlete Yana Pittman, who used Dr Gawler’s meditation programs and techniques to help her recover from her knee injury in Athens in 2004.
Dr Gawler will run along Ballarto Road from Cardinia Recreation Reserve Access Road, starting at 10.40am and finish at Cardinia Primary School.
