YVCA cricket gets going

YARRA Valley Cricket finally got underway on Saturday with rescheduled round one fixtures in the D. J. Strachan Shield.
Seville, the season 2009-10 runners-up, hosted 2008-09 premiers Wandin, which lost several top players this season.Seville batted first and, with only Andrew Kay getting his innings going, it was dismissed for 88 after the tea break.
Wandin began the chase with wickets falling regularly. The match was close much of the way, Wandin passing Seville with only a couple of overs to spare. Wandin made 8/96 with J. Rowe on 29 and Matt Tilney 3/9.At Wesburn, Mount Evelyn, 8/146 with Kane Jones on 52, M. Whitehead 31 not out and N. Bark 3/32, defeated Hoddles Creek’s 8/97 with C. Piggot on 15, Aaron Booth 3/24 and Chris Anderson 2/14.
Healesville scored 7/157 with S. James on 32, Scott Hamer 32 not out and Kirt Henderson 3/45, beating reigning premiers Warburton-Millgrove’s 120 all out. For Warburton Luke Darwell led the way with the bat with 45 with J. Robinson 3/25 and, completing a good match, Scott Hamer 3/27.
Yarra Junction hosted Woori Yallock and the home side, after its 40 overs, was 9/155 with Ben Lever on 33 and Andy Doolan on 34. Andrew Sharp took 4/21 but Woori Yallock was too strong and Junction lost to the Tigers who made 5/191. Danny Hyndman made 77 for Woori with Ryan Smith on 40 in what was a strong first-up win for the Tigers.
At Silvan the home side made 7/195 from its 40 overs with Jamie Cornford on 78, Jason Harvie 58 and Nathan Cuthbertson 3/27 to defeat Coldstream, all out for 97. Chris Dobson made 36 with Silvan’s recruit in Matt Stark taking 4/10 and Sean Walliker 3/22.
In the R. A. Finger Trophy, at Yellingbo on a brand-new pitch, the Woori Yallock Tigers made a great 5/226. J. Williams made 65 and Matt Worlley 67 not out to defeat Yarra Junction’s 6/135 with M. Haggar on 28, Travis Nightingale 29 not out, M. White 3/18 and J. Coombs 2/11.
In the Gruyere District v Silvan contest, Gruyere was 8/96 with A. Reker on 21, C. Kenins 3/9 and T. Fisher 2/11, defeating Silvan’s 54 all out with R. Sleeman on 31, Dean Prouse 4/18 and N. Hunter 3/8.
Warburton Millgrove with 9/80 lost to Healesville’s 3/166 with Michael Sawyer 46 not out.
Round two on Saturday will again be a one-day round of games starting at 1pm with the DJSS matches being Coldstream v Silvan, Wandin v Healesville, Woori Yallock v Seville and Hoddles Creek v Yarra Junction.
