WORK has begun on a $3.5 million pedestrian and bicycle bridge across Maroondah Highway in Lilydale, creating a continuous link on the Lilydale to Warburton Rail Trail.
Yarra Ranges councillor and advocate for the bridge, Tim Heenan, said its completion would help link local townships with rural communities.
“The Lilydale to Warburton Rail Trail is one of our region’s most popular recreational assets, and is used regularly by cyclists, pedestrians, horse riders and joggers,” he said.
Cr Heenan said the trail bridge would create a continuous link between Lilydale Station and Warburton without the need to cross Maroondah Highway – a benefit for both trail users and motorists.
“It’s wonderful to see VicRoads begin this project and council is looking forward to its completion at the end of the year,” Cr Heenan said.
Cr Heenan said council was also working with Mt Lilydale Mercy College to create a link around the school grounds to the trail along Nelson Road.
The project is being jointly funded, with VicRoads contributing $2 million, Parks Victoria $1.3 million and Yarra Ranges Council $200,000.
