THE internet is opening up a whole new world of inspiration for artist Jean Groves.
And for Gladys Pfeiffer getting to know her way around a computer keyboard – and all that goes with it – is another source of material for her interest in singing.
The ladies are among a number of people attending Golden Wattle House, a supported social group for older frail and isolated people in the Healesville and district communities, who have embraced Broadband for Seniors.
Golden Wattle recently set up a Broadband for Seniors Kiosk providing free access to computers and broadband, along with training and support, to help get seniors in the community better connected.
The program is funded by the Australian Government and provided by NEC Australia.
NEC group manager David Cooke said training which increases confidence and skills in older Australians was a vital part of the program.
“This initiative can help to build community participation and levels of social inclusion and will address the issue of older Australians feeling isolated and ‘left behind’ in a technological age,” Mr Cooke said.
Keying in ‘flowers’ on Google provided Ms Groves with a on-screen palette of blooms.
“I want to increase my knowledge and use of computer applications, but also use it for my other interests such as painting,” she said.
Trainer Rosy McGinnis said a number of Golden Wattle participants had indicated they were keen to be involved.
“One of the things most people have said they would like to know more about is emails, and also they want to know what the internet is all about,” she said.
At the Broadband for Seniors Kiosk all that is certainly available to them, and to other senior members of the community.
