Community cup draws to a close

As the midway point of the two Pennant seasons approaches, it was a quieter week for Yarra Junction Bowling Club.

The midweek competition was suspended for the Victorian Open, with Yarra Junction holding third spot on the ladder.

Competition resumed for the weekend competition, but Yarra Junction had a bye so had to watch as Yarra Glen surged past into top spot.

However, Lilydale lost, so Junction holds onto second position, and will play them both over the next three weeks.

Meanwhile the Community Cup is drawing to a close, with the last round and finals to be played on Friday.

This has proved to be a very successful event, in which community organisations and businesses play off in a round robin format, with a lightning finals series to finish.

The teams are mentored by a club member for all but the finals. The Mature Masters from U3A have taken the lead from The Loose Ends, the men’s team from the Gladysdale Bakery.

Just behind in third are The Honey Joys, the women’s team from Gladysdale Bakery, holding a narrow lead over the Wombats from Hoddles Creek CFA and the Highland Crew, currently tied just ahead of the Millgrove Soccer Club.

Still in with a chance are the Reds from the Red Cross, so the competition is intense for a finals berth.

It is hard to see how Bowling for Columbine from Cire can mount a challenge, though nothing is impossible in sport even if mathematically it is.

Hopefully some new enthusiastic bowlers have been discovered in this competition, and the club will benefit from their ongoing participation.

Congratulations to them all.
