YARRA Glen’s Gulf Station will hold a plant sale this weekend to help raise funds for the historic homestead.
The sale was originally planned to take place as part of the Pioneer and Working Horse festival on January 28 and 29.
However, when the festival was cancelled due to the bushfire threat at Kinglake late last month, new plans had to be put in place.
Friends and Relatives of Gulf Station (FROGS) chair, Lesley Barnes, said staff and volunteers were keen to salvage the plant sale.
“Members have spent the past 12 months preparing for the plant sale and we were all pretty disappointed when the festival was cancelled,” she said.
“Gulf Station is a very precious place and had to be protected, so it was right to cancel the festival and we’ve now found a way to resurrect the plant sale.”
Ms Barnes said the sale would feature hundreds of plants, some propagated from plants at Gulf Station, at very reasonable prices.
“There will be plants for sale from $3 each and there is an impressive collection to choose from,” she said.
Ms Barnes said proceeds from the sale would go towards Gulf Station recouping some of the financial losses from the cancellation of this year’s festival.
“In past years we’ve raised around $1000 and we’re hoping to get the same level of support this year,” she said.
The Gulf Station plant sale will be held on Sunday, 12 February from 10am to 4pm in the property’s orchard. Entry to the sale is free.
