Top stats after round 2 from teams in Upper Yarra

Ahead of Round 3 with the Easter break this weekend, Premier Data has released some of the top stat getters from the first two rounds in Division 2 seniors.

Upper Yarra sides have made a strong start to the season with Powelltwon, Yarra Junction and Warburton-Millgrove sitting in 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectively. Powelltown have won both of their games and sit level with Kinglake (who received 4 points for their Round 1 bye) on points and Powelltown beat Warburton-Millgrove with a goal after the siren from new recruit Joel Perry.

Sam Morton from Yarra Junction is the leading goalkicker in the league, kicking 14 goals in a 224-point win over Yea, despite going goalless against Powelltown in Round 1. Following behind him are Powelltown’s Dean Roy and Joel Perry with 11 and 8, and Warburton Millgrove’s Mitch Bonuda also with 8.

It’s an all Upper Yarra affair in Ranking points, with Powelltown’s Russell Cowan leading the way on 257, followed by the Yarra Junction pair of Ewan Wadsworth (236) and Jesse Bombinski (232) and rounded off by Powelltown’s Ben Wratten (231) and Bonuda (229). Wadsworth(65,1st) and Wratten(52,4th) also feature in the top disposal getters.

It seems they are dominant in the air as well, with Powelltown’s Sam Meadows (17), Wadsworth (15), Bonuda (15), Powelltown’s James Ashby (14) and Yarra Junction’s Dean Eliades (14) in the top five, while for contested marks Powelltown’s Perry and Michael Fowkes (6) are top of the pile, with Warburton-Millgrove’s Brady Mitchell (6) and Bonuda (5) also featuring.

Warburton-Millgrove and Powelltown also have three of the most dominant ruckmen, with the Burra’s Nelson Aldridge second for hitouts (48), Wratten in third (31) and Powelltown’s second ruck Jason walker fifth with (24).

Bombinski is the clearance king with 18, with Wratten(16), Aldridge(13) and Cowan(10) in second, third and fifth respectively. Warburton-Millgrove’s James Iacono(14) and Cowan(13) are tough tacklers around the contest featuring third and fourth for total tackles.

Focusing on defenders now, Ashby (12) and Warburton-Millgrove’s Jack Lee (11) getting their sides back on the front foot with rebound 50’s while Powelltown’s Matthew McArthur (8), Warburton-Millgrove’s trio of Shawn Andueza (6), Lee (4) and Aiden Westlake (4) are pulling out the golden fist to spoil opportunities for their opponents.

Powelltown have the loose ball on a string, with 14, 13 and 12 loose ball gets for Wratten, Meadows and Cowan has them third, fourth and fifth for the league.

Division Two has shown a good offence is sometimes your best defence, high scores a result of teams getting it deep into the forward line regularly, with Cowan (18,1st), Bombinski (16,2nd) and Wadsworth (13,4th) providing inside 50’s while Wratten (22), Wadsworth (22), Cowan (18) and Yarra Junction’s Allen Chandler (18) are the top four for score involvements.
