WITH veteran paceman Paul Wilson a late withdrawal because of injury, Upwey Tecoma’s emerging medium-fast bowler Sam Waters stepped up on day one of the round 4 clash with Johnson Park at Fairpark.
The home side elected to bat first and 30 minutes before tea was cruising at 1/140 and with skipper Peter Dunlop in control. The Sharks looked set for a mammoth score.
Enter Victorian Country Colts player Waters who claimed VCCL under-21 teammate David Carmen caught for 46 with his first delivery.
He then bowled Bryn Gaunt for one and the Sharks lost momentum and 5/40 in the middle stages.
Dunlop who occupied the crease for 270 minutes, scored a disciplined 139 and helped set the Tigers a target of 261 and the game is very much in the balance, with Waters finishing with a credible 5/52 from 18 overs.
Kyle Snyman continued to dominate for Lysterfield with an unbeaten 92 to post 234 on the board against Monbulk.
Jason Fraser collected 5/60 and will need to fire next week to register a second win for the season.
Former Diamond Valley batsman Steve Elworthy led the way at Batterham Park with 95 in a total of 172 for The Basin against top side Ferntree Gully, which was 1/17 at stumps.
The Upper Gully Kings registered the highest score of the day with 9/270 against neighbours St Johns Tecoma.
New skipper Paul “Lenny” Henry with 76 and Justin Roberts (40) were the main contributors.
Two former Premier leg spinners dominated in the Eildon Park-Rowville game. The Panthers have 203 on the board thanks to 75 not out from Cameron Cosstick while Aaron Daniel was sensational for Rowville with 7/49.
Belgrave with 197 may have too good a score for the Knox Gardens Falcons who will require everyone contributing with the bat next week to record their fist win.
Swing bowler Adam Wild performed admirably with the ball taking 5/45.
• In other news former South Belgrave player Glen Maxwell took another step closer to being chosen for Victoria when he was selected to represent Australia in the Hong Kong Sixes at the weekend. Maxwell, 21 was the only Victorian in the seven-man squad.
