THE start of Round 4 was played in wonderful cricket weather all over the Yarra Valley.
In the D.J. Strachan Shield, on the tiny Silvan oval, the home side batted first against Warburton-Millgrove with Luke Painter 95 not out at the innings’ conclusion of 245 all out. Luke Darwall with 4 for 35 was the best of the Burras’ bowlers.
At Morrison Reserve, the visitors, Gruyere District, batted first but were routed by the Mount Evelyn attack as Aaron Booth with 4 for 7, Harry Bruekers 4 for 18 only received resistance from Matt Tilney 23 as Gruyere were dismissed for 69.
In reply at stumps Mount Evelyn are 6 for 193 with Andrew Giblin 105, S. Cogleman 32, Aaron Violi 2 for 21 and R. Prouse 2/31.
Woori Yallock travelled to Queens Park to play Healesville and on winning the toss elected to bat. At the close of play they were all out for 282 with Andrew Sharp 40, Dallas Spencer 43 and Greg Selby 80, while for the home side the best figures were Darren Edwards with 3 for 30. Healesville will need to bat well next week to attain this total.
Wandin at home batted first and after a slow start and a middle-order slump steadied to be all out for a defendable score of 261, with Scott Hasan 60, John Aumann 47 and Paul Grayling on 43 leading the way.
Nathan Fall bowled well for Yarra Junction taking 5 for 39. The visitors do have the batting to reach this target but much will depend on the bowling of Jackson Wright, the fastest in the YVCA, and his steady partner in Simon Young.
With better weather the Hoddles Creek team was able to host the main game this week. They batted first but were all out for 111 with Leith Lambert 3 for 18 the best with the ball. Not one notable batting performance was advised.
Coldstream are 4 for 43 in reply as Brenton Derix tried valiantly to give his team a chance, taking 3 for 18 in a fine spell.
Early wickets next week could see the home side in a first innings lead early in the day’s play.
In the R.A. Finger Trophy, Seville amassed a big score at home against Coldstream with Craig Atkins 143, Phil Smith 124 and Leigh Aitken 74, as the score reached 6 for 403cc with Paul Attiah 3/35.
Season two will run from 2 July to November with school holiday and Cup Day breaks.Coldstream have a huge target next week as Seville look to consolidate top place on the ladder.
Woori Yallock, all out for 136, Michael Davern bowled his leggies well to take 5 for 50 but in reply Healesville slumped to be in trouble at stumps at 9 for 95. Sam Watts 42 not out was the only leading batting of the day while for the Tigers, Adam Dunn grabbed 4 for 31. An outright one way or the other would appear to be the probable outcome next Saturday.
Warburton Millgrove are 5 for 83 at the end of day one with B. Taylor 37 not out and Steve Darwall 24 not out after dismissing Yarra Glen 105. With A. Cowen 35, B. Taylor 3 for 8, Steve Darwall 2 for 3 this match could also become a second innings affair on day two.
The C Grade 1 matches were also interesting as Kinglake hosted Launching Place United who batted first and reached 8 for 194 CC with J. Wilson 59, S. Patterson 34, Michael Young 42, S. Williams 2/31, A. Westworth 2/21.
Gruyere District have a big target to reach on day two as Poweltown made 7 for 300cc with Garry McRorie 106 and D. Kraus 6 for 62.
Hoddles Creek hosted Silvan at Wickhams Road and batting first reached 5 for 254cc with S. Leman 130no and Mark Cornford 2 for 45.
In the other match between Marysville and Mount Evelyn, both teams have completed their first innings with Mount Evelyn leading by just 11 runs. Sadly no teams’ scores were received by the YVCA but best batting for Marysville was from J. Ackers 29, M. Sutton 19, J. Hoskins 10, and best bowling for Mount Evelyn, P. Kerr 3/15 off 11 and R. Wilson 2/13 off 4.3.
Best batting for Mount Evelyn were P. Kerr 30 and D. Davey 20, while best bowling for Marysville were M. Sutton 3/33 off 12, T. Gleeson 3/17 off 7.
We look forward to continued good cricket weather as we begin many regional and inter association matches in the coming weeks.
