BADGER Creek Primary School’s green approach to its school grounds has paid off, with the school winning the state Landcare Education Award recently.
The judges were impressed by the school’s weekly Junior Landcare meetings to plan projects.
From those meetings students established bird, frog, herb and vegetable gardens, built a community greenhouse, made a compost centre, planted a Scentbark Reserve and two wildlife corridors and developed a weed control plan.
Badger Creek Primary School principal Mark Brisbane received the award on behalf of the school at a ceremony at Government House last Tuesday, 8 September.
Mr Brisbane said the award was a great achievement and encouragement for the school.
“The school is very excited that the students and parents are getting recognition for their efforts,” Mr Brisbane said.
“They’ve put a lot of work in, not only over the year but over a couple of years,”
“It really adds value to what they’ve done and gives us impetus.”
Mr Brisbane said that the work couldn’t have been achieved without the help of the Mt Toolebewong Landcare Group and school parents, especially Karen Garth and Coral Jeffs.
Badger Creek Primary School will now go into the running to win the 2010 National Landcare Education Awards which will be held in Sydney.
