Open view for artscape

IN TWO weeks’ time when more than 50 artists invite visitors to view their craftsmanship as part of the Yarra Valley Open Studios, none will be more thrilled than Cathy Van Den Essen.
Two years ago, sponsored by the Yarra Valley Arts Council, Ms Van Den Essen took part in the Vista Community Leadership Program.
The idea she had back then for a community project as part of the program will be realised on 18 to 20 September with the inaugural Yarra Valley Open Studios event.
Ms Van Den Essen completed a craft degree in 1991 majoring in gold and silversmithing.
“Life’s journey has brought me family, motherhood and now, work as an artist jeweller,” she says of a brief career, which will no doubt include the Yarra Valley Open Studios as a highlight. I draw inspiration from the historical symbolism of the Vikings, ancient cultures and also runes,” she said of her work.
“I prefer pieces that have character, not necessarily perfect, but well balanced and simply designed.”
She sees the Open Studios event as a forum for the many artists in the Yarra Valley and one which will see art, in its many forms, added to the valley’s iconic tourism drawcards of wine, produce and the environment.
Ms Van Den Essen said the project had been a long time in coming to fruition but, thanks to an amazing committee – fellow artists Mike Emmett, Tim and Liz Peel, Nicola Stairmand and Ali Griffin – it had every promise of being nothing less than “awesome”.
The Yarra Valley Open Studios will feature 43 “studios” around the Yarra Valley.
