THE GOALPOSTS are back at Gallipoli Park in Marysville.
The posts were cemented in on Wednesday last week, thanks for the efforts of the newly-formed ‘Footy at Marysville’.
The posts were funded by private donations and support from the VCFL’s Bushfire Relief Fund.
Secretary Bill Metcalfe said the erection of goalposts was symbolic as well as being a big step towards the ultimate objective of the group – redeveloping football and netball in the district.
The launch of the posts was supported by Marysville residents and visitors from the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football League, former players and coaches, and a new generation of Marysville footy hopefuls. Marysville Primary School students travelled up from their interim school at Taggerty to enjoy a run on the oval and take part in the ceremonial first kick through the posts.
Lining up, with the assistance of former Collingwood player and current Woori Yallock captain Damian Monkhorst, they handballed a footy down the line to Marysville champion and local football stalwart Alan Walker, who kicked the first ball through to christen the posts.
Mr Metcalfe said next year should see further additions to football infrastructure around the ground, and some high quality games being staged at Marysville.
In the meantime, the goal posts will get a good work out when the annual pub match between Buxton and Marysville/Narbethong is played on Sunday, 11 October.
