Ben Thompson shines in swing

DESPITE dismal climatic conditions at Emerald Golf Club last Saturday, Ben Thompson (18) shone like a beacon by taking out the first week of the three-round Winter Cup with a massive 45 points.
This was despite losing three shots of his handicap during the week.
The light at the end of the tunnel will be the shining eyes of the handicapper.
Wayne Degering turned in another slashing round in B Grade but found his 44 points still one short for success.
Martin Yeats (7) won A Grade with 39 points and Brian McCoy (23) mastered the rest of the C Grade squad with 38 points.
Of the others competing Dave Hunt came in with 39 points and Allan Ecclestone had 38 to stand at the base of the rostrum but get no cigars.
The hogging of awards for the day continued when Yeats picked up nearest the pin on the fourth and the 10th; Degering was nearest on the seventh and 12th; while Ecclestone was nearest on the 13th, and he managed to pocket the pro pin on the 18th.
Hunt won the Café Marte cappuccinos when he was nearest after two shots on the 17th.
Wednesday’s Obviously Faded Golf (OFG) was won by Ben Thompson (21) from Moss Fuller’s (22) 69.
Next week is the second week of the Winter Cup and it will be interesting to see if Thompson will continue his blitz on the course or whether the golf gods will smile on some other mere mortal.
