UPPER Yarra Secondary College has farewelled its chaplaincy committee after 12 years of loyal service.
Upper Yarra Secondary College principal Michael Hill said the recent thank-you dinner at the St John Ambulance Hall in Wesburn was well attended by members of the school and wider community.
“The chaplaincy committee has worked to help build lives, both directly and indirectly, within the community and the school for many years,” Mr Hill said.
“I’ve been astonished by the amount of people in the community who just give without seeking any recognition or anything back.”
He said chaplains provided a valuable support to the school and wider community and would not be possible without the committee helping raise money to support the chaplains in the schools through fundraisers and sponsorship.
The chaplains are an open ear to students, who can discuss with them where they are in life and where they want to be,” he said.
“The chaplain acts as a guide to students, discussing areas where they might need assistance.”
He said that Upper Yarra secondary chaplains Steve Listopad and Grant Morris, and previous chaplains, had been an integral part of their school student services department.
“The retiring committee have been fantastic and I am sure that the new chaplaincy committee will be up to the task as well, of supporting the chaplains,” he said.
