HEALESVILLE Greyhound Club saw plenty of punters enjoy the race of the season on Saturday 7 March.
Committee member Gary Thorneycroft said the 12-race program, the food, the entertainment and the long weekend drew in a large crowd on the day.
“It was the best turn-out we’ve had for a while,” he said.
Cranbourne South trainer Florence Alister picked up $12,500, with his a two-year-old dog Holey Moley the surprise winner of the Lions Healesville Cup.
Mr Thorneycroft said Holey Moley beat last year’s winner as well as the favourite, Dee Man Vane, by a head and with the time of 18.51.
“Last year’s winner ran fourth or fifth and it was an outsider that took out the top prize,” Mr Thorneycroft said.
Next year’s cup prize will rise to $20,000, making it the richest prize in greyhound straight racing in Australian.
