FERNTREE Gully motorcycle enthusiast Clive Carter sees his age as an advantage on the track.
The 61-year-old took on riders half his age at the Phillip Island Superbike World Championship, held from 27 February to 1 March.
“They think after the corner,” Carter said.
“I think before the corner. They just bomb in and do.”
The meet included two international classes and a host of national support categories, including Australian Historic.
Carter raced a 1976 1100 Kawasaki Rikmone to 15th position, ahead of 25 competitors.
His fastest lap was 157 seconds. The top class completed the circuit in 138 seconds.
“They’re just a little bit faster,” he said.
Carter broke the 350cc and 500cc lap record at Phillip Island just over 30 years ago.
He has been racing for 46 years and sees the sport as a hobby.
“This is just for fun,” he said.
Carter said regular exercise was the key to staying on track, and he had a few more races left in him.
