Carmel Pignataro has been a passionate supporter and advocate for the Cancer Council for many years through her involvement with Mont De Lancey’s Greatest Morning Tea.
But in November 2015, this advocacy was made all too personal when a devastating cancer diagnosis for her husband, Mick, sparked her own journey in supporting those searching for a cure.
Mick grew up in Wandin and was an integral part of Wandin community not only through business, but also through the lifelong bonds and friendships he developed over the years.
Enduring six months of continuous chemotherapy and two surgeries, Mick showed incredible determination and strength for his family, but tragically lost his battle at the age of 47, leaving behind his heartbroken wife and three devoted sons.
Through her own grief, Carmel realised the urgency in raising awareness and fund-raising for organisations like the Cancer Council, to help fund vital research, support services, prevention programs and a cure.
Organisers of Mont De Lancey’s Greatest Morning Tea event, Alison Jones (Sebire) and Natalie Pye have been a great support to Mick, Carmel and their family.
“For me to be able to help with this event, in Wandin … I really feel like I’m doing it for Mick,” Carmel said.
Carmel said baking and just being part of such a positive event had been a good experience and urged people to support the morning tea on Thursday, 25 May.
The Biggest Morning Tea will be held at Mont De Lancey Historic Homestead from 9am to 11.30am, and will include a delicious morning tea, raffles, a guest speaker and a guided tour. Entry by donation.
